organic expo.pngIt’s that time of year again and I’m giving away 4 double passes to the Organic Expo in Sydney on 5-7th August. That’s only just around the corner so get in quickly for a chance to receive a double pass to the expo for free. This year I’m asking “Why would you choose organic?”. You can write your comments below or post them on Facebook at The Veggie Club. Competition closes at noon on Wednesday 3 August and winners will be sent their tickets by express overnight post. Winners will be notified by email. Read More

Truffle 1.pngIs it possible to cash in on the lucrative industry of truffle farming from one’s own backyard? That’s the question I began to ask myself after going on a truffle hunting weekend in Millthorpe, NSW.

In theory, I guess it’s possible if you have the time to wait and you can reproduce the appropriate conditions to cultivate this fungus. Loretto and Greg Good are the farmers at Millthorpe Truffiere and they gave us lots of information on how to cultivate these gourmet delights.

Although I did get the impression that a lot of what they’ve done has been trial and error, with the paddock originating from another one of the family’s “crazy ideas” (they’re actually sheep farmers who planted out 800 trees on speculation, having never grown anything else commercially before). Ferry 1.pngIt’s a ritual for so many of us …. even an addiction for some. I border on the latter, for without my Saturday morning fix, my week is simply not complete. I’m talking about my weekly trip to the farmers’ market, where I not only take in the produce but, equally, the atmosphere. I love to feast on this whole sensory experience. basket veggies.pngI popped into the supermarket today to pick up a few things that I normally can’t buy at my local produce or farmers’ market and came face to face with a life sized cut-out of chef Margaret Fulton promoting Mothers’ Day. This was rather confronting because my own mum actually bares a striking resemblance to Margaret Fulton. Good old Margaret Fulton stands for good homely food, always has and always will. And she always includes good quality fresh produce. I love her! (Maybe it has something to do with her looking so much like my mum).

So I thought it would be fun to see what home style meal mums would be served this Mother’s Day. Tell me what home grown veggie you’d use and the sort of meal you’d cook it in for your mum. I’ll send a packet of seeds out for the best comments.

Happy Mothers Day xx

chooks.pngIt’s time to talk turkey …. well, at least, try chicken chatter.
As a chook owner it’s important to understand your chicken’s different vocabulary. Or so I found out this morning. If you aren’t fluent in chicken as a second language and you own some chooks, then I suggest you find out soon. It could be the difference between life and death. Really!

Now you might be tempted to think that I’m having a laugh, or worse, going slightly mad, but even researchers are saying that the humble chook has a language understood by the entire flock. Scientists at Macquarie Uni have discovered that chooks talk to each other regularly. Read More
